Working Principle of Refrigerated Air Dryers

 

A refrigerated air dryer utilizes a refrigeration system to cool compressed air, causing the water vapor within the air to condense into liquid water, which is then separated and discharged. This process yields dry compressed air with a low dew point. The operational process can be divided into the following key steps:

1. Air Pre-cooling and Inlet
High-temperature, humid compressed air first enters an air pre-cooler (a component of the heat exchanger), where it undergoes heat exchange with the exiting low-temperature, dry air. This achieves preliminary cooling while simultaneously recovering “cold energy,” thereby enhancing the overall energy efficiency of the unit.

2. Deep Cooling 
The pre-cooled air enters the evaporator. Inside the evaporator, a low-temperature liquid refrigerant (supplied by the refrigeration system) evaporates and absorbs heat, rapidly lowering the temperature of the compressed air to between 2°C and 10°C (the pressure dew point temperature). At this stage, the water vapor in the air becomes supersaturated and condenses into tiny water droplets.

3. Gas-Liquid Separation
The low-temperature compressed air, now containing liquid water, enters a high-efficiency gas-liquid separator. Utilizing centrifugal force or baffle structures, the water droplets are effectively separated from the airflow.

4. Automatic Drainage
The separated condensate is automatically discharged from the unit via an automatic drain valve (such as a float-type or electronic timer-type valve), preventing the moisture from being re-entrained by the airflow.

5. Air Reheating 
The dried, low-temperature air flows through the air pre-cooler (the same component utilized in Step 1), where it exchanges heat with the incoming high-temperature, humid air. Its own temperature rises back to near ambient levels, preventing condensation from forming on the outer surface of the outlet piping while simultaneously further reducing the load on the refrigeration system.

6. Refrigeration Cycle
A refrigeration compressor drives the circulation of the refrigerant through the condenser, expansion valve, and evaporator. This continuous cycle ensures that the evaporator is consistently maintained at low-temperature conditions, thereby guaranteeing continuous dehumidification capability.
